Ahimsa - (Do not Kill)
Everybody knows that breaking the rule “do not kill” is punished by law. But AHIMSA has nothing to do with murdering. All the sage people of India are talking about the immortality of the soul. You are immortal by nature and no one can kill you as you cannot kill another soul too. Our bodies though are mortal, they are not eternal as is everything else material existing and living on the Earth. In your childhood you had a body which is not the same now, it has completely changed and also when you become very old your body will be completely different. The inner, spiritual law of AHIMSA means that a man kills himself all the time. Inside of us there is a constant inner stress and constant conflict between the body, the emotions and the mind, a conflict that kills you and destroys your life force. For example, you wake up in the morning and your mind says: “You must get up and go to work”. The body does not want to, it is sleepy or tired and between these two parts appears the conflict. Or you love someone but your mind does not allow you or permit you to say it to this person. It says to you that what you want is immoral or bad. Your emotions need happiness, joy and pleasure but your body may be sick or ill or just tired and weak and this also leads you to have inner conflict. So these conflicts make you feel stressed, nervous, weak and angry with your life and the world around you. You feel always that someone or some situations and circumstances stop you from being happy or block your freedom. The cause though is inside of you: You body, your emotions and your mind like in the fairytale with the fish the bird and the turtle pull you in different directions.
Yoga most of all is unity between the body the emotions and the mind. This unity can come only through letting go and freeing oneself from attachments, on the one hand and concentration, control of one’s own attention and development of the will power on the other hand. Will power is the ability to rule over your body, your emotions and your mind and achieve independence from them. These two parts (letting go & will power) must go together.
What is most important though for you to know is that you cannot suppress or just kill the conflict between different parts of yourself because if you suppress something inside you, you don't destroy it. You only put it deeper into your subconscious and from there this suppressed energy will emerge again, it won’t let you at peace. However many people are trying to do exactly this. Instead of developing themselves as we mentioned above (by letting go, relaxing and also developing their will power at the same time), when the conflicts arise in them they try simply to avoid them, run away from them, suppress them or accuse someone or something for their condition. In this way there is no transformation, change or evolution in one's life.
